At the Phuket airport counter, a local operator asks 800-1,200 THB per day for an automatic economy car, while an international brand starts from 2,000 THB. On top of that, a 5,000-15,000 THB deposit is blocked on your credit card. In high season, the base rate climbs by up to +60%, and in peak weeks by up to +85%.
This guide breaks down what you will actually pay in 2026, how deposits and excess work, and how to avoid disputes at return.
What car rental costs in Phuket in 2026
Price depends less on the model than on the rental length and the month. The daily rate is always the most expensive, the weekly rate is lower, and a monthly rental can work out 30-40% cheaper per day than a three-day booking.
We will shortlist properties for your budget
Pick a range and we will send a shortlist with prices, layouts and payment plans within 24 hours.
Typical ranges per day:
- Economy automatic (Yaris, City, Almera): 800-1,200 THB, mostly from local operators.
- Mid-size sedan or small crossover: 1,200-2,000 THB, a popular choice for winter-season residents.
- International brands: 2,000-4,500 THB, with newer cars and stricter rules.
- Hyundai H1 minivan: from 2,950 THB, suited to groups or families with luggage.
- Economy car for a month: 12,000-18,000 THB, and never without a seasonal surcharge.
One local operator lists a Toyota Yaris Ativ at roughly 1,000 THB per day with a 5,000 THB deposit, and an MG 5 at about 1,200 THB per day, also with a 5,000 THB deposit. For four people, a Toyota Veloz runs about 1,700 THB per day with a 7,000 THB deposit. Some airport-area operators advertise rates from as low as 788 THB per day. According to the October 2026 price index, an automatic economy car rented for a week averages around 24 USD per day, with offers ranging from 15 to 61 USD. A scooter costs about 9 USD per day, a fair alternative for short trips.
Longer terms bring real discounts: 7+ days: 8% off, 11+ days: 15% off, 16+ days: 22% off, and for rentals of 90 days or more, discounts of up to 42% appear. Anyone staying three months is almost always better off with one long contract than four short ones.
A common mistake is seeing a December price and assuming it is the base rate. The base rate is low season, May to September. By New Year the same car moves to roughly 1,800-2,200 THB per day, and cheap automatics simply run out on the island.
Deposits: how much is blocked and when it comes back
The usual hold is 5,000-10,000 THB on a credit card, rising to 15,000 THB for larger cars and long contracts. The money is frozen rather than charged, and the deposit is not part of the rental price.
If you have no working credit card, many local operators will take cash instead. One Phuket operator takes the deposit in cash and refunds it in cash immediately if there is no new damage, deducting only up to a 15,000 THB excess cap otherwise. Another local operator quotes a 2,000 THB deposit for foreign customers, with same-day refund for returns between 08:00 and 17:00 when there are no extra charges. That variation is exactly why you must read the contract.
The amount should be written in the contract in figures, with a refund date. A handwritten note on scrap paper is a bad sign. Never leave your passport as security: a copy is acceptable, the original is not.
Another common story: the deposit is returned, but two or three weeks later, because the company is waiting to see whether a camera fine arrives. Ask about this before signing and get the timeframe in writing. If the answer is whatever happens, find another company.
Insurance and excess: what is actually covered
Thailand's compulsory Por Ror Bor insurance covers people, not the car. Limits per person are up to 80,000 THB for injury treatment and up to 500,000 THB in case of death, and hospital stays are only partly covered. It will not pay for a dent in a rented Yaris.
The vehicle itself is covered by CDW, usually 200-500 THB per day on top of the rate. CDW carries an excess, the threshold up to which damage is yours to pay. In Phuket it often starts around 5,000 THB, which means a broken mirror or scratched bumper is almost always on you.
Full zero-excess cover, which also handles minor parking scrapes, costs roughly 150-300 THB per day, though not every company offers it. In our editorial experience it is the one add-on nobody regrets: a single encounter with a bollard in a narrow Patong lane pays for a month of it.
There is one exception. If you rent for two or three days and only drive the 402 highway to the supermarket, the extra cost will not pay off. Take basic CDW and park carefully.
Also ask out loud at the counter what is not covered. Tyres, glass, undercarriage, theft: each item should have an answer in the contract, not just a smile from the agent.
Licences, fines and scratch claims
Formally, a foreigner needs a national licence plus an International Driving Permit (IDP). Thailand accepts both the 1949 Geneva and 1968 Vienna formats, and licences from ASEAN countries are valid on their own. Rental shops often do not check the IDP, but police at fixed checkpoints do. Without it the conversation ends with a ticket you pay at the station named on it.

There is an unpleasant side effect too: without the correct licence type, the insurer has grounds to refuse an accident payout. Testing this yourself is expensive.
The minimum age is usually 21, with an upper limit of 65 or 70 depending on the company. Traffic drives on the left, and the first half hour is hard not because of lane discipline but because of roundabouts and the habit of looking for the mirror on the right.
Scratch claims at return are a genre of their own. The defence is simple:
- film a walk-around video at pickup, covering wheels, sills, roof and windscreen;
- photograph the fuel level and odometer separately;
- insist that existing damage, even minor, is written into the handover form;
- return the car in daylight with a staff member present, never leave keys at reception.
Local operator, international brand or airport pickup
Many operators deliver the car to HKT airport for free, so you usually do not need to pay extra for terminal pickup. Confirm this when booking.

International brands charge 2,000-4,500 THB per day and offer predictability: a newer car, a clear contract, and a card hold instead of cash. Local operators are about half the price, but you can only judge the fleet condition by eye on the spot.
Our pick for two weeks in season: a reputable local operator, an automatic economy car, full cover and a card deposit. For a month or longer, a long contract with a term discount and a written procedure for replacing the car after a breakdown. If you are in Phuket for a week and staying in Patong, honestly calculate taxis first: at two outings per week, renting does not pay back.
In high season cars are snapped up early, so for January it is better to rent online before you fly rather than searching on arrival.
FAQ
Do I need a credit card to rent a car in Phuket?
For a 5,000-15,000 THB deposit hold, yes, this is standard at larger companies. Local operators often take the deposit in cash, and the amount should always be recorded in the contract.
How much does a monthly car rental cost?
Economy class costs 12,000-18,000 THB per month plus any seasonal surcharge. For rentals of 90 days or more, discounts of up to 42% off the base rate appear.
What does compulsory Por Ror Bor insurance cover?
Only harm to people: up to 80,000 THB for treatment and up to 500,000 THB in case of death. Damage to the car itself is not covered, which is what CDW is for.
Can I drive without an International Driving Permit?
Not legally. The rental shop may not ask for an IDP, but police at a checkpoint will, you can be fined, and your insurer gets grounds to refuse payment.
What is the minimum age to rent a car?
Usually 21, with an upper limit of 65 or 70 depending on the company. Driving experience and car class can also affect the terms.
How long does it take to get the deposit back?
It varies by operator. Some refund cash the same day if you return the car in business hours with no damage, while others wait two to three weeks for possible camera fines. Get the refund date written into the contract.
Is a rental car worth it for a one-week stay?
Only if you plan frequent trips. If you are staying in Patong and make about two outings per week, taxis usually cost less than a rental plus insurance.
One last practical tip: before you drive off, check that the glovebox holds a copy of the car registration and a valid policy. Police at checkpoints ask for exactly these papers, and missing them is the renter's problem, not the owner's.
